WHAT IS FAMILY PROMISE?

Family Promise of Gwinnett County, Inc. brings existing local resources together to help homeless children and their families regain their housing and their independence, while maintaining their dignity. They mobilize congregations of faith, community volunteers, and social service agencies. Full details on how Family Promise operates can be found on their website. Redeemer has supported Family Promise of Gwinnett for over ten years through funds from our Faith Promise giving and providing volunteers to help serve families who are participating in their program.

Currently, Redeemer is a Family Promise Supporting Congregation to Westminster Presbyterian Church in Snellville (next to South Gwinnett HS). Westminster offers their building as shelter for homeless children & their families and we help provide evening meals, fellowship, & overnight hosts. We serve in this capacity alongside Westminster three times each year. Click here to download a brochure explaining our role as a supporting congregation and volunteer areas.

MEAL TEAM LEADER – After receiving info on how many families to prepare for and any dietary restrictions from Redeemer’s Family Promise Coordinator, Meal Team Leader will contact meal preparation volunteers with this info, offer guidance on providing a varied menu, and coordinate for meal items to be delivered to Westminster Presbyterian Church.

MEAL PREPARATION VOLUNTEER – Sign up to prepare and deliver one or more of the following: main entree, side dish, or dessert.

GUEST FELLOWSHIP VOLUNTEER – Arrive by 6pm to have dinner with guests and visit with families, who wish, in the common living room until 9pm (or some portion of the 3-hour visitation period). We encourage families with children to volunteer! Your children can provide great company for the guest children. Adult and teen volunteers in this area need a short one-time training session through the Gwinnett Family Promise organization. Our Redeemer Family Promise coordinator will contact you with details if this is your first time volunteering for fellowship.

OVERNIGHT HOST – Two volunteers (one female and one male) are needed each night to stay from 9pm until 6am. An easy shift since the main job is to get a good night’s sleep! Instructions are provided for handling emergencies. Volunteers bring their own sleeping bag or bed linens and pillow to use with a bed provided in a separate room set up for their overnight stay. Overnight hosts lock up the building and leave by 6am the next morning. Our Redeemer Family Promise coordinator will contact you with details if this is your first time volunteering as an overnight host.
