HUMBLE BIRTH || DECEMBER 24, 2025 || SERIES: HUMBLE ADVENT || SPEAKER: PASTOR DAVID GOEBEL
When we love God, following what He asks of us is not an onerous burden that we just have to slog through. It may not always be easy, but the heart of a true daughter or son longs to bring joy to our Father in Heaven.
We often picture the birth of Jesus through Western eyes—imagining him turned away from a “holiday inn” and forced to sleep in a barn. The reality was likely quite different. In a culture where hospitality was highly valued and formal inns were rare in small towns, Mary and Joseph were probably welcomed into a relative’s home. When there was no room in the living space, the animals were moved aside to make room, and Jesus was laid in a feeding trough that sat between the human and animal areas of the home. A humble beginning for a King who would bring an upside-down kingdom.
In a Christmas season filled with messages that the next gift will bring the joy you’re longing for, Advent invites us to prepare for the God who comes not simply to give us what we want, but to bring joy to every part of our lives by rescuing us from the sin that weighs us down.
